History: Scientists have found gravel volcanic rock and a possible history of volcanic activity in the area, dating back to around 1.46 million years.
History: From 1910-1923 almost all of the radium in the world came from western Colorado and there were multiple deposits in and around Gateway.
Plantlife: Some plants of Gateway consist of the Utah Juniper, Rio Grande Cottonwood, Brown spines prickly pear, hookless cactus, Mormon tea, pinyon pine, broadleaf yucca, and the ponderosa pine.
Watershed: Fish like the cutthroat, rainbow, cut bow, and brown trout are all found throughout the Dolores/ Colorado River Watersheds, rivers accompanying Gateway.
Wildlife: Bald eagles, one of the many Gateway natives can have a wingspan of 8 feet and live to 20 years.

Ponderosas are my favorite trees! You won't see any right in town, but if you gain some elevation by driving up John Brown Canyon behind the resort, there are tons of them!
