1.) History- Although most of the settlers were ranchers there was also Prospectors who found mineralized deposits of copper and sliver. They started to mine 1875 on the East Creek drainage.
Geology- Around 1.3 million years ago lots of soil, sand, rock filled the canyon and cut off the ancient Colorado or Gunnison river. This caused the formation of the U-shaped canyon.
Plantlife- The Utah Juniper has wide and shallow roots. They also have small blue and white berries that are edible.
Watershed- In the Unaweep Canyon an unusual thing happens, water flows both east and west, this is because there are only two creeks. The Unaweep Canyon is one of the only canyon in the world where this phenomenon occurs.
Wildlife- The Black-Headed Grosbeak is a bird that has a dark to light brown body with some white feathers. They have a yellow to orange underbelly and under wings. To top the look off they have a black head with a large grayish oval beak. They live all around the areas and have a lifespan of 5-6 years. They mostly eat seeds, snails, spiders, fruit, oats, and wheat.
